Our primary expedition leader Jeremiah “Bullfrog” Pastor has just received his “Wilderness Rescue and First Responder” (WFR) certification from SOLO training organization. He received his training at the SOLO Southeast Wilderness Medicine facility at the Nantahala Outdoor Center in Bryson, North Carolina. The WFR is a nine-day comprehensive course that covers all aspects of backcountry medicine. Students gain knowledge, skills, and confidence in areas including musculoskeletal injuries, soft tissue injuries, environmental emergencies, survival skills, and other medical emergencies. SOLO Southeast’s WFR courses place an emphasis on leadership, prevention, and decision-making, giving you the tools to make critical decisions in remote wilderness locations. Skills are gained in traditional classroom sessions as well as through participation in practical skills scenarios. The major topics covered are:
- Patient Assessment
- Treatment of Common Injuries
- Treatment of Medical Emergencies
- CPR
- Basic Wilderness Survival Skills
- Wilderness Rescue and Evacuation
This certification is valid for 3 years and is essential to the efforts of the program.
